InfoAssure, Inc. developed a patented cryptographic key management software product called Need2Know® (N2K). N2K is based on the Information-Centric Security (InfoCenSec®) model and incorporates the company's three core patents. The patents, Information-Centric Security (US7,715,565), Cryptographic Key Construct (US7,739,501), and Cryptographic Key Management (US7,711,120), are the result of the company's research and development conducted under a competitive contract award and three-phase participation in the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program within the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).

Lightburn, CEO of InfoAssure, "We developed N2K due to a growing interest in both the government and commercial sectors with re-defining the current security model of perimeter, or network/device-centric approach for data access control and protection which we believe must move towards the Self-Protecting Data concept based on the persistent protection Information-Centric Security (InfoCenSec®) model to keep pace with the dynamic information sharing security requirements of a virtual web enabled world. This need to redefine the information sharing security model is exacerbated by the ever-increasing documented failures of the older network-centric and PKI identity/attribute certificate concept based security model where all authorized users who have authenticated access to the closed stove-piped networks also have access to all data resident within that network enclave regardless of duty/role or need-to-know. As we know from the 9-11 commission and current news reports on sensitive data leaks of both government and commercial data, this model is not info-sharing friendly and is also vulnerable to unauthorized trusted insiders data theft/misuse."
Need2Know® (N2K) key management product integrated into the enterprise information environment provides a persistent cryptographic need-to-know protection of the data object at rest or in transit, enabling significant performance enhancement for secure discovery, access control, and information sharing independent of web and network-centric infrastructures. Our N2K key management product is extensible through our licensed software developer kits and will complement and enhance the scalability and assurance levels of enterprise data security products, as well as current network and end point security products on the market today.
